Skincare for Beginners

By Amanda Cohen on March 23, 2017

Whether you go to school in a place where the sun is always shining or a place where the weather remains frigid until May, you know that skincare is extremely important. You can use one product to help oily skin, but then it makes your skin flaky and dry. You then use another product to fix your dry skin, and you end up with a bunch of pimples on your face.

How do we win with skincare? Some of you may think that the only solution is to go see a dermatologist and get a prescription for “the good stuff.” However, I am here to tell you that there is a better way! I have a great list of products that you can pick up at your local drug store and/or order off websites like Amazon and Dermstore.

Read on if you want to learn some A+ tips for proper facial care!

Avene Products

Avene products are the best products. I know I’m biased because I use them, but I wish I could be a spokesperson for that company because they rock. I use the oil-free, soap free, facial cleansing gel and it has changed my life (and my skin).

There is a common belief that the only facial care products that work are the ones with exfoliating beads in them because “they scrub away all the bad stuff.” This is not true! You should use an exfoliate once or twice a week but that’s it! If you use it too much then you will wipe off your skin’s protective layer.

Avene is easy on your skin and it’s definitely not hard to use: you simply squirt some of the gel into your hand and apply it to your face using medium circular motions.

Albissa Moisturizer

Many people haven’t heard of Albissa because it is only sold by Deborah Winters, a skincare specialist in Washington, D.C. This is the link to the product: https://www.secure-booker.com.

This moisturizer makes your skin luscious without making it oily (an issue that I have found with various other products). In the cold Michigan winters, I have found this product to be most effective. It not only preserved my skin but also helped to better my skin. I use this in combination with the Avene facial wash, and my skin has been the best that it has ever been!

St. Ives Blemish Control Face Scrub

Earlier in the article, I said that it is important not to exfoliate too much, but that doesn’t equate to not exfoliating at all. When I exfoliate, I use St. Ives Blemish Control Face Scrub. I love this product because it helps remove any nasty residue on your face without being too harsh. I have never had an instance where the facial scrub burned or scratched my face, which can happen with strong exfoliates.

You shouldn’t use too much of this exfoliate (or any exfoliate) at once. Just use a dime-size dollop and scrub your face in circular motions! I exfoliate once on Wednesday (hump day, aka self-care day) and once on Sunday (a free day to do whatever I have to get done).

Elta Products

Elta products are fantastic; however, they are actually not sold in traditional drug stores so you have to get their products online. I specifically like Elta’s sunscreen because of their variety of options. For example, they have various SPFs and they have ones that also can be used as a tint for your face (basically you can look tan while lying in the sun and protecting your skin).

A lot of facial sunscreens make your face feel oily and leave a thick residue on the skin; well, this does not happen with Elta! I reapply sunscreen all the time in the summer and I never feel like I have anything on my face when I use Elta … it’s incredible!

Burt’s Bees Facial Cleansing Towelettes

Burt’s Bees is not only about lip care (even though they kill the lip care game), their facial products are great as well! I love their facial cleansing towelettes for everyday situations where I won’t have time to go home and wash my face. Not only are they refreshing, but when you apply the towel to your skin, you can feel your skin getting cleaner. These towelettes are perfect for traveling because it is so easy to feel gross on a plane and they are easy to pack in your carry-on bag!

No longer will you have to be uncomfortable with your facial skin, and if you use even just one of the products listed above I guarantee your skin will feel refreshed and healthier! If these products don’t work, then you can go talk to a dermatologist, but give these easy-to-buy items a try first. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
