Sports-Inspired Fashion: Tomboy Meets Fashionista

By Amanda Cohen on March 31, 2017

There is this socially constructed perceived notion that girls are either sports-loving tomboys or Barbie-loving, clothing-obsessed girly girls. Well, I am here to tell everybody a few things. First, it’s the 21st century people — it’s time to wave away these untrue, sexist stereotypes. Second, there is actually a way to combine your love for fashion and your love for sports.

With the rising popularity of athleisure wear and the enhanced role that athletes and celebrities are playing in the fashion industry, you cannot look on any website without seeing a sports-inspired outfit! Keep on reading if you want to know how to embrace sports into your fashionista wardrobe!

First off, Adidas is absolutely killing it with the fashionable sports-inspired clothing. Because of the hard work from their team of designers, Adidas has successfully brought back the representation of past sports teams (like the Bulls). Most of their sports clothing is vintage, which makes it even that more cool and trendy. You can rock a Bulls bodysuit just like Beyoncé did on her Lemonade tour! Since the rise of athleisure apparel, sweatsuits are no longer just for lounging! I’ve seen people wear these sweatsuits to class and even to parties! Pair this look with Superstar Adidas and you will be all set!

In addition to sweatsuits, Adidas is also making fabulous sports-inspired sweatshirts. Crew-cut sweatshirts are all the rage. Adidas, in particular, uses really comfortable and durable material … they combine comfort and fashion perfectly. If you are having a lazy day, but you want to look presentable while also being comfortable, then I highly recommend you go on the Adidas website and buy one sweatshirt. Wear this sweatshirt with a pair of somewhat form-fitting joggers and you have the perfect presentable lazy day outfit!

Sports team jerseys used to be only something that you would wear to a game, but now you can rep your favorite sports team on a fun graphic t-shirt. Stores like Forever 21, Revolve, 12th Tribe, Life Clothing Company, and others are revamping the graphic t-shirt game. Graphic t-shirts are the perfect way to combine sports and the latest fashion trends. One of my favorite looks is a sports team t-shirt with a pair of distressed high-rise jean shorts, a belt, and a pair of fun and flirty shoes. You heard it here first, ladies and gentlemen, graphic t-shirts are no longer reserved for bands and abstract patterns!

If you want to incorporate sports into your wardrobe in a subtle manner, then you need to start browsing every and all stores’ shoe departments. Shoes that are meant for running are starting to appear on Fashion Week runways. Why run in your Athletic Propulsion Sneakers when you could wear them with some ripped jeans and a lightweight sweater? Who needs exercise? If you incorporate sports into your wardrobe that is the equivalent of a workout (pause for laughter). Even Air Jordan shoes and Adidas fit the trendy sports-inspired fashion category. If you are feeling extremely lavish you should try and get your name on a waitlist for a pair of Yeezy shoes (pause for awkward laughter because that is not possible on a college student’s budget).

Hats are no longer just to protect your face from the sun. Snapbacks are all the rage in fashion these days; I never go a day without seeing someone sporting a snapback boasting their favorite sports team’s name on it. I personally like the camouflage look with my team’s mascot or letters on the front! If you decide to rock the sports cap, then you shouldn’t wear a graphic t-shirt or sweatsuit because then that would be overkill. I would recommend a white or black t-shirt with a pair of jeans or shorts and a fun pair of sneakers.

Honestly, if you decide not to listen to any of my fashion advice in this article that’s fine (even though my advice is pretty good). The main takeaway from this article is that girls can combine fashion and sports without being categorized as a tomboy or a girly girl. People should be able to express themselves without having to apologize for combining the best of both worlds into one single fantastic outfit!

If you want to go for the more traditional sports-inspired outfit, throw on a jersey, some calf or knee socks, and a pair of tennis shoes and you are game. I still wear my Wizards and Capitals jersey to sleep and I am always extremely content and comfortable! If you want to find these simple jerseys, go on Amazon or any sports store. If you want to buy more vintage-inspired jerseys, go on Etsy or eBay — they have thousands of options!
