Decorating an apartment can be challenging on its own. Finding furniture, understanding utility and rent payment, making sure your apartment is secure — it’s such a headache!

However, this process can be much more difficult for someone who loves fashion and wants his/her new living space to epitomize a fashion emporium! Whether you want to channel your inner Alexander McQueen or Coco Chanel, this article is for you. Read on if you want to combine the best of both worlds: the fashion world and the apartment decorating world.

Accessorizing

Accessorizing an apartment can be both the best part and the worst part of the experience. On one hand, you get to be creative, but on the other you have so many options that it’s hard to narrow your down your favorite items. Wall art is a priority because let’s be real, you don’t want your walls to be bare and boring, do you? Well of course not!

There are a few different routes to take when choosing wall art; you can go for canvases or framed prints. I prefer canvases because I think they add a certain aesthetic and they are also much more casual looking compared to framed prints (plus framed prints can be very expensive).

A classic piece that never goes out of style is the Prada Marfa sign. If you love fashion, then chances are you know what the Prada Marfa sign is. The beautiful thing about this type of canvas is that it makes a statement while not being too loud; because most of the canvas is blue or white, you can put it in your apartment regardless of what your color scheme is.

It is nice to have some neutral pieces, but you should also purchase one piece of wall art that is a little bit more abstract. For example, my sister has a piece where a girl is sitting on a sink wearing Alexander McQueen, but you can’t see her face and the colors are very bold. Some people may think that this is aggressive, but it embodies fashion and the different types of photoshoots that models go through.

Where should you look to buy these prints? I would check West Elm, Society6, Wayfair, Pottery Barn, Red Bubble, iCanvas, and Etsy. If you are looking to be more visually inspired, check out Pinterest and Wanelo! If you are looking for a bargain, check out eBay and Amazon!

In terms of accessorizing, other than wall art, table books are a fantastic way to make your apartment look sophisticated. You can check websites to see if they have books about fashion or biographies about certain designers that you can fan out on your living room table (if you want to read them, you can, but it is not a requirement).

You should also utilize more abstract accessories, like cloth mannequins that you can pin pictures to or where you can display a super trendy outfit!

Furniture

When it comes to furniture, there are also two different routes you can take for your apartment: modern like Giorgio Armani, or vintage classic like Coco Chanel. Let’s start with a modern look. When decorating your apartment in a modern fashion, you want to use lots of smooth and sleek surfaces that are neutral colored. However, you should choose one other color (like red) to make your apartment pop. Look through magazines like Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar for inspiration and treat your apartment like the backdrop of a high-end photoshoot.

Now, if you are looking for a more classic, vintage look in your apartment, watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s for your inspiration. Look up photos from photoshoots with Versace, Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, and more and do the same as those who want a modern apartment: treat your apartment like the backdrop of a high-end photoshoot.

Look for items that have wood finishing or items that look somewhat antique (but not actually antique because antiques can be very expensive). Use more color and have at least one neutral color as your “base color.” Whether you want to use the 60s, 70s, 80s, or even the 20s as your inspiration, you want to make sure that everything looks somewhat cohesive.

I hope this article was helpful and I wish all my readers the best of luck while undertaking this huge and exhausting task. Remember to stay true to yourself and remember that you can create the perfect apartment without going broke. Don’t forget to buy or rent the necessities (like silverware and plates)! Happy decorating everyone!
